A Closer Look: The 'Cauldrons' in the Valley of Death, Siberia

This weeks Ancient Aliens episode on Evil Places was highly interesting, particularly the feature on 'Cauldrons' in the Valley of Death, Yakutian Siberia. The Cauldrons have a long history with reports on them going back hundreds of years.

The Cauldrons in the Valley of Death Siberia on Ancient Aliens 2011, incase you missed it:

Russian Ufologists have proposed that these ‘Cauldrons’ are the remnants of UFOs, wrecked in an accident or an ancient aerial battle. Russian researcher Dr Valerey Uvarov argues that they are connected to a power plant located deep inside the Earth, a weapon to protect our planet from dangers in outer space.

Extraterrestrials built them in ancient times, he says, and now they operate automatically, having shot down the Tunguska meteorite in 1908, the Chulym meteorite in 1984, the Vitim meteorite in 2002 and possibly in 2011 the Irkutsk meteorite. More from his Nexus Article.

The location of cauldrons seems to co-incide with large meteorites crashes nearby - if you look at the Google map below, numerous large meteorites that hit Earth have occurred in the vicinity.

Both expeditons in the past and recent (see ancient aliens expedition below) have resulted in some form of strange radiation illness to people visiting the area. Many assume that this is due to the surrounding state being a nuclear test site during the Soviet era. Although 12 tests were performed in the Sakha Republic, this does not explain the pre-nuclear reports of sickness to those visiting the Valley of Death dating back in the 1930's and 1800's.

Picture from recent expeditions to the area:
Brief History of the region:
1853. Russian Siberian explorer R.K. Maak writes in his book Viliuysky okrug (The Viliuy Region) that the side of a giant, submerged metal cauldron protrudes from the ground near the Vilyuy tributary, but only the rim is visible and there are trees growing out of it.
1908. A yet-to-be-explained fiery ball known as the Tunguzs Meteorite exploded over Siberia .'The so-called Chulym Bolid followed in 1984, copying the path of the Tunguzs Meteorite with surprising precision.
1930 An aged merchant and his granddaughter stay in a Kheldyu ("iron house" in the local language) a slightly flattened reddish arch where, beyond a spiral passageway, there turned out to be a number of metal chambers in which they then spent the night.
1936 alongside the Olguidakh ("place with a cauldron") River, a geologist directed by elderly natives came upon a smooth metal hemisphere, reddish in colour, protruding from the ground with such a sharp edge that it "cut a fingernail". Its walls were about two centimetres thick and it stuck out of the ground roughly a fifth of its diameter. It stood leaning over so that it was possible to ride under it on a reindeer . His drawn images at the bottom of this post.
1989..D.Arkhipov, a researcher into ancient cultures of Yakutia writes in his book Drevnaya Yakutia (Ancient Yakutia) that among the population of the Viliuy basin there is a legend from ancient times about the existence in the upper reaches of that river of bronze cauldrons or olguis.
1996. A small Russian magazine publishes an article by ufologist A. Gutenev about the mystery of the cauldrons and the Valley of Death , which he attributed to extraterrestrials.
2004. Dr. Valerij Uvarov published a longer, more in-depth English version of the article on the internet, making the mystery known to the rest of the world.
2010 Report from recent expedition to the area - featured on ancient aliens

Location of Olguydakh - 'river with cauldrens nearby'
Apparently it's located circa 40 - 50 km North / Northeast from Vilyuyskoye (the lake system from which the Vilyuy River progresses). Latitude (DMS): 63° 27' 8 N
Longitude (DMS): 112° 6' 35 E

Large Meteors and Olguydakh - coincidence? :

I spent some time trying to find the above co-ordinates and satellite images of the area where the cauldrons are to see if we could actually zoom in on them . Unfortunately google maps can't show closer satellite images of the region. But i did find the approximate area of Olguydakh where they are meant to be and the nearby Vilyuy River and oddly enough the area of the 1908 Tunguska meteor event was in close proximity as well as a few other major meteor crashes.

Geologist drawings 1936

"In days gone by, there were bold men among the local hunters who would sleep in these rooms. But then they began to fall seriously ill, and those who had spent several nights in a row there soon died. The Yakut said that the place was "very bad, marshy, and beasts do not go there".

Very interesting, There could be real evidence there. any one know a bored billionaire that would finance an expedition take few interested ufo bloggers with him.

An interesting read!...not heard of this story before, in Siberia, & still getting my head around the WORD..."Cauldrons"

CAULDRON:...a large metal pot in which liquids are boild. OR

a Dangerous and tense situation.

Now match that, with this story & sketch!?...I don't know!..what else you could call this thing, other than a Mystery!? and a big one at that!...It would be interesting to know what the radiation count was.

That in its self, would raise the prickles on my neck...Good video!!

It would be interesting to apply that new remote sensing (IR satellite imagery and I'm assuming some sort of algorithm)technique they've used recently in Egypt...

I don't know about you but I'd risk my life to glimpse the alleged artifacts and investigate the area.

I bet our gov't has already been there tryin to figure out what the hell is up with all the radiation and discovered these "couldrons" and figured they're the only reason a meteor the size of texas aint blew this tiny planet in half

One thing is for sure.
This is not normal Gama radiation there.

on ancient aliens they came up with the concept that the supposed lizard man like alien race that lives within our planet built these towers hat come screwing out of the ground and shooting energy at 'low flying ufo's' my brther and i both recalled a video we saw a while ago from a satalite where a ight moved towards the planet but sharply turned and ruched away followed by what looked like a beam of energy..... i had chills
tell the billianaire we're up for the excabition :)

My guess is that these are something leftover from the time of Atlantis. As we know the flooding after the last ice age buried almost all evidence of life and culture from those times under the oceans. A few bits of evidence like the Antikythera Mechanism show up from time to time though. These cauldrons would make an excellent adventure and perhaps produce a wealth of knowledge. I'm surprised it's not taken more seriously.

Anonymous said...

I like your guess:) but if what you say about the leftover from the time of Atlantis, with the flooding, after the last ice age,
one could assume, that the water would have rushed into places
such as underground, and destroyed!
this makes me think that maybe the
"Cauldrons" are more recent! unless
thay're ceiled off, and watertight!

The bigger problem I think, could be the "radiation & sickness!" but not sure, whether its Radiation sickness, or something else.

Your right about the Cauldrons be an excellent adventure,so where is this billionaire? lol:)

I suspect this is all bunk. Many tales come out of Russia that have mo basis in reality, but grow in the telling. All these Russian "Dr.s" who comment on UFO cases and such seem to be totally gullible. In this instance, why don't they go research the place then, before releasing all sorts of fantastic speculations?

Anonymous said...

They did some research in the past. According russians there is some high tech installation beneath the ground. It is still active and probably very well protected. The purpose and origin unknown.

Anonymous said...

Why dont UFO hunters go there and dig up this 'cauldron' and put spectacle to rest then show the hizzle world. The truth is out there ... Tob knows

Anonymous said...

Well I`ve seen the same story in several places over the internet (+ancient aliens), and the best thing is that with a couple of different names, and slightly modified. So sounds like a really scientific text.. But I must also admit that the area they are speaking of and the native population there are such of a sort, that anything is possible. I mean that there are no ways to prove this as a hoax. So perhaps this is true, perhaps there is something, or then perhaps somebody just invented a nice joke to awaken the thirst for mystery and perhaps earn some money.

Just a word from me, doubt everything, everything is possible as long as you can really show that it`s not, but at least the Ancient Aliens series has proved to be just a good trick to get more money. Why else they would repeat the same things over and over again. Or then you may call it brainwashing, although their means are are probably only financial.

Watched Ancient Aliens on History and was wondering why would somebody or corporate dig this site up or use some sort of underground mapping technology to see whats underground. We already use this technology to drill for oil...just seems fishy. Plus a simple excavation would help uncover a lot of information. Anyone know if something like this is going to happen?

Anonymous said...

With the speculations of it being some sort of weapon, I am sure that the Russian government would have already sent an expedition; and if there was something there, it would now be some sort of military base. Unless it is only a toxic waste dump by aliens or man. Governments "lose" radioactive waste all the time.

Anonymous said...

first of all, the radiation alone tells you why no one goes up there, plus the fact even trees around these "cauldrons" are dead.If these stories have been passed down from generations just as the Hopi of Americas have then they are older and far from a hoax. Further more how hard is it to believe that maybe governments dont wanna know. Ever think that maybe they themselves have tried with problems. I point to the sinkhole in south america that was perfectly round and people swore seeing something vcome out of the ground the moment it happend. I propose that these either are a weapon left here by something other than us, or are actually crafts, and or pieces left here and will soon come to light when the time comes. So many of you claim hoaxes after everything and its sad. Intead of be spoon fed your news/proof why not try to research it before you claim you know wtf you are talking about.

To address some of the comments...my belief is that these domes could well be part (emitters for a longitudinal or scalar instrument perhaps)of an ancient defensive device/weapon against asteroids and comets.

But not one built during our current high tech epoch, but one built by a prior high tech culture. My guess would be 13,000 years ago, when the latest multiple asteroid impacts devastated the Earth, the heat and pressure of which triggered the end of the Millions of years old ice age, caused 15,000 foot high tsunamis (tsunami sea bed deposits found at this height. S. America) and 'biblical' proportion flooding worldwide..sea level rising some 300 feet, drowning the global coastal landmasses (where 90% of our current population live).

This Siberian device, may have been built as an asteroid / comet defense, but obviously failed, only serving to shatter one or two huge asteroids into planet wide peppering bodies instead, leading to the destruction that followed, only now are we at a similar level of technology, 13,000 years later...or put another way, exactly half way through a full processional cycle through our Glactic ecliptic, crossing the plane of strongest gravity, which is theorised to attract asteroids and comets towards our system, peppering all of the planets, including Earth.

Let's hope this time around, we don't actually have to launch a so called 'black knight' space station, to orbit the Earth holding our collected human, animal and plant DNA samples (two by two) and cloning technology, to restore our world, when the dust clears from the skies, and the sunlight can get through again.

That's my theory in a nutshell...the Siberian Cauldrons are not UFO's, but part of a 13,000 - 15,000 year old comet buster, using scalar waves to destroy or deflect (and hopefully not just break them in the atmosphere) comets and asteroids heading our way.

Proof?

There's plenty. But i've bored you all enough already.

Curiously, the dome shapes described are a perfect match for Tesla’s dome 'energy emitter' atop of his tower at Wardenclyffe. Perhaps we now know why it was ordered to be dismantled...scalar devices have the potential power to destroy an entire continent.

But not one built during our current high tech epoch, but one built by a prior high tech culture. The dome shaped emitters, would have had thousands of years to dry from a world flood (to the poster who thought they would still be filled with water).

I actually wouldn't mind taking the trip, if it were being properly organised, funded and equipped.

It's a very interesting idea, to explore and try to end the mystery of these reported domes, and discover what they actually are or were.

It's more than buying an airline ticket though...these things are hidden among vast areas of Siberian tundra, among some of the most inhospitable land on the planet. In winter the temps are low enough to kill you in minutes, almost flash freezing you, in summer the malaria carrying insects may finish you off with disease, or drive you insane with the constant buzzing and biting...then there's the thousands of miles of swamps.

On foot would be out, too dangerous i think.

If money were not a problem, a fleet of heavy lift helicopters, like the Russian Mi-26 (load of 20 tonnes) or other types. These could drop us right on top of areas of interest, together with excavating machinery and habitats etc.

Even a large blimp / airship would be able to carry as much as 150 tonnes right to the areas of interest and lower it and us down.

Would take serious money and planning, but it may well provide serious discovery and kudos to the sponsor.

Thinking about the radiation issues, perhaps the mystery of the origin of these domes is even more startling...maybe the radiation is their funcion...after all we all know radiation is mutagenic, and alters or mutates life...perhaps, during the early times of our Earth, these were placed here, by life unknown, to actually cause life to form via specific frequencies of radiation designed to result in specific organisms at some point in time.

The cauldrons of creation maybe.

Ancient Aliens has some serious problems with their arguements in the show: They show this dancer with a bulky basket costume and conclude that itmust be a copy of an alien spacesuit. If the aliens were so advanced to travel huge distance and time, why would they have a suit bulkier than our 1970's technology? They suggest that things along Ley Lines are refueling stations when they could have never got here in such short hops.

Anonymous said...

I think..Marion!..that there was a lot more going on in our ancient past, than just the talk of Ancient Aliens, you might consider the technology of earth,as it was then? I mean just look at some of the HUGE STONES of the past, like the MASSIVE STONEs, squarely cut, at "Baalbek near Lebanon" weighing 1200 tons!!? We can't lift and MOVE these stones today!!So how did
the ancients,do this in their time?

Then there is the 14000yr.
"Puma Punku. site" Stones that were magnificently cut by, what looked to be done by, Power tools!!How can this be? Who could have cut these stones? the people of earth? or Ancient Aliens!?...and since you are on this page, which is about the Cauldrons, and it is suggested, that Ancient Aliens of long ago, were responsible for this installation as part of earths defence against incoming bodies from space, and is said! it still working today, for goodness sake!? if thats true!?....but it makes you think, Marion Campbell!!?

The clues for a clearer understanding of our past, can be staring us right in the face, but are we seeing them for what they really mean? to get that, bigger picture!!!

WHAT IF??...............?

Interestingly is the name for such "cauldrons", olguis. While the region lies along the Olguidakh River.
I'm a Dentist and linguistics is far away from my area of expertise, but there is a disturbing phonetic similarity with al-gidar, the Arab word for plate or small dish.
In today's Brazil, African-Brazilian religioins pays respects for their deities throug offers of food, drinks and goods, while traditional offerings are made over these ceramic pots .
Shure, alguidar comes from Arabian linguistic roots, but why they have to make offerings to Gods precisely on an alguidar ???

Hello, I allso have done a lot of looking at the reports of strange things that happened in the far past.

I watched a lot of "ancient aliens" episodes and more from other sources.

I came to one conclusion that i am sure of. And many other people will agree with this.

There where no "aliens". It was all us humans. We could have gotten help, but no more than that. Whe ARE the ancient aliens.

There was a far more advanced civilisation, i am sure of it. It must have been swept away by some major event. Look at underwater cities yet to be fully explored etc.

Only the biggest most robust objects (like pyramids) have survived through time.

I think there are things that already have been found but that are kept silent.

What happens in Egypt for example. There is more under the Gisah Plateau waiting to be revealed. Or covered up you can bet on that. The governament there blocks all international reasearch instead of working together all around the globe. They want the honour for great discoveries, but that is nog important, the can't see that. Everyone should participate, it is useful to make our world a better place to live in.

There is some stuff in Irak and Iran allso waiting to be revealed.

Pyramids are far older than the Pharaos. There is more to it.

There is some interesting things going on in Guatemala allso. MIRADOR.They are excavating the largest pyramid and surrounding civilisation in the world. But allmost no one knows of it. It is really HUGE. But covered by the jungle. There are a bunch of locals and some Archeologists working there. But no one looks at what is going on there. It should have world wide interest !!!

And in China they cover up their pyramids with dirt and trees? Come on. What is the reason? The big pyramid was shining white. Pearl like. But now its a hill with trees on it.

But the day all is revealed will come. And all of our history books will have to be rewritten.

The evidence of it all around the world is too large. But a lot of people are looking from the wrong angle.

If there is something ancient in Russia it has to be revealed, for the importance of all mankind. We must learn from events in the past, to protect us in the future. If there is really a returning cataclysm and the pyramids etc. are warning us. Than time is running out. We have to get our hands on that information and technology, and use it in the right way. For the sake of every human being.

Some people are blocking world knowledge caused by religion or convincements.
We must overcome that.
We have to learn, look at the facts instead of speculations and twisted reports.

Sorru for my bad English, i am normally Dutch spoken.

If you want to share interests or maybe give me the honour to participate in some research, i would be honoured.
I am not a big man with a lot of fundings. But i have a lot of common sense, am able to relativate and eager to learn more about these subjects.

@ Stijn

I agree completely with what you've said.

There are new discoveries all the time, and with every new discovery (that is talked about) we push our timelines 'for civilisation' backwards in time.

At one point, 5000 years ago was being taught in schools and Universities as the maximum age of Human 'civilisation', this has now been pushed back to at least 13,000 years officially, and as far back as 200,000 years unofficially.

A city, miles in area has been discovered recently in Africa...at a time when we are told Humanity was was only just becoming anatomically modern.

Yet, there was 'civilisation', order, organisation, art, heirachy, and farming. All the things we consider as civilised.

200,000 years ago...

I believe there is a cyclic cataclysm that affects all live on Earth..wipes out many species of animal and plants, as well as all but obliterating advanced Human civilisations, causing the survivors to return to a primitive, hunter-gatherer type of existence for a number of centuries.

I estimate the last such event caused the end of the last major ice age, (although itself soon caused another 1,500 year 'mini' ice age, and that event i believe was a worldwide destruction from Meteorite and cometary impacts..there evidence for strikes around the entire planet has been found all over the world, and dated to around 13,000 - 14,000 years ago...right at the end of the last major ice age.

Much of the ice melted, caused massive tsunamis and sea level rises, volcanic eruptions and Earthquakes also devastated Human and animal populations.

The evidence for advanced Human societies, even worldwide societies, is all over the world and continues to be discovered, as you say, under the oceans and around now sunken ancient coastlines.

This estimated timeframe of multiple impacts at 13 - 14,000 years ago, also coincides with worldwide stories of major world flooding, including that of the Biblical flood, but supported by up to 400 different cultures around the world who all share the same epic flood and destruction histories.

The establishment don't want us to know we were at least as great tens of thousands of years ago as we are now, for one reason only....they know it's going to happen again..this is why Russia and many others around the world have a manic underground shelter building programme for it's people...which unfortunately indicates to me, that we may be coming close to the repeat cycle for destruction.

I hope i'm wrong...but something had to have wiped out these great civilisations, that we now only find whispers and ruined relics of...and there is rock solid proof that the Earth was battered severely with space rocks 13,000 years ago...not too much of a stretch to think the events are certainly related.

I hate to ask a really stupid question, but even if these cauldrons exist as advertised, someone claimed that reptilians made them? Possibly for a meteorite defense system?
I'm not aware intelligent reptiles exist, so please prove that extraterrestrial life exists, and intelligent ETs are here, or at least, were.

I think we are also in danger of underestimating our ancestors. Modern man, whether from Bronze Age Greece, the Mississippi Mound builders, or Shang-era China, were as intelligent as we are.
The Celts of Baltic coasts had nor writing system that I know of, but they made some amazing raised wooden road systems anyway.
A silk (!) dress was discovered in the UK and dated to the Roman era- silk was cultivated then in western China, a long ways away from the British isles.
The Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan was built on a swamp by a stone age culture who never invented the wheel.

As far as the radiation goes, your best defense against radiation would be to prepare yourself physically over the preceding weeks (and for weeks thereafter) by eating a macrobiotic diet known to reduce and eliminate the effects of radiation. Carry lots of baking soda and stay alkaline in your ph levels. This will work to mitigate the radiation and shed unwanted fat lol. This was a great thread. I'd love to join this expedition.

Ok I see everyone is up for the challenge yet no one is discussing the details involved in such an expedition...what i would like to see is not a pleathura of slightly interested joes but rather a formation of a team with highly specialized skill sets and availability to conduct such a time intensive excavation and then a contingency plan discussing the outlined plan to overcome the challenges; radiation, geology, permafrost excavation, and lets not forget the average obstacles you'll encounter like for instance siberia being the coldest place on the planet and the time frame in which to accomplish this plus government approval lets just leave it at that although there are many more issues to handle all that said and done and then you may...may get your sponsor

What you say about the difficulties with both the planning and execution of such an expedition is very true, but at the moment, we're only a loose group of anonymous blog posters, who seem to share similar interests in the mysteries of ancient peoples.

Serious and detailed planning for a proper expedition would only ever really take place, after the appearence of serious offers of funding, in a non-anonymous setting. Reasonably so really, as without a firm offer of such funding, everything else is moot really.

Were you hinting that with a detailed plan in pace, you might consider funding such a trip?

In order to gather these professionals, you would need to coordinate schedules and run credential checks on everyone involved. Russia has never really had the money for such research and development and don't believe they could have done it. Very interesting. And yes! Let's look for a billionaire to finance it.

Lets get Bill Gates all over this, just tell him he'll make trillions off of the tech he salvages. I really hope this is true, about the cauldrons that is. I recall seeing this episode of Anciant Aliens and almost crapping my pants because of the implications. But, as Stephen Hawkins has said, just by looking at humanity, we can see how intelligent life out in the verse is something we would not want to meet, equating it to Columbus and the Navitve Americans... didn't work out so well for them.

From Spikey to Bandlands Gunslinger

Mate, unless it involves sterilisation programmes for the third world or some sinister and frankly insanely naive and ill conceived population reduction agenda...that Gates chap isn't going to be interested. We need a real visionary with cash, not just someone with cash.

Unfortunately, Ancient Aliens is buckling under the pressure of attempting to come up with enough material to crank out weekly documentaries, which is why their shows are increasingly outlandish. It’s clear that they’re hoping that the majority of their audience will simply buy what they’re selling at face value, and for all I know, perhaps they’re right. However, Ancient Aliens has a lot more explaining to do before the “cauldrons” of the “Valley of Death” in Siberia holds any interest for me.
For starters, in 2013, a photograph isn't too much to ask for items supposedly seen by people who called themselves "researchers" and "scientists" in 1854, 1933, 1937 and 1947. An audience shouldn’t be expected to place implicit trust in the words of a few strangers who fail to offer a shred of proof for what they claim to have seen in a remote area of the world that few people will ever be able to see.
BTW, no living witness of a "cauldron" remains.
As seen on Ancient Aliens, Ivan Mackerle and several "scientists" explored the “Valley of Death” in Siberia with a "motor assisted parachute." Although the cauldrons were reported to have projected from the ground high enough for a "man on a reindeer" to ride beneath within the past century, Mackerle and his team decided that they'd found a cauldron submerged in a small pool of water, and therefore could not be seen, and offered further proof by stating that they had heard a metallic sound upon hitting the bottom of the knee-deep pool with a stick, and they felt a smooth metal surface with their hands at the unseen bottom of the pool.
Also, Mackerle claimed that he suddenly felt ill (fever and nausea), which he presented as final evidence of having found a mysterious cauldron.
One can find a plethora of reports on the Internet stating that “scientists prove the existence of Siberia’s mysterious ‘cauldrons!’” It’s disconcerting to realize that the man mentioned above, Mackerle, is the “scientist” to which all of the aforementioned articles refer.
There are too many genuine mysteries in our world for me to invest belief in completely unfounded stories claimed to be truth by a handful of people.

@Anonymous (4:24pm)from Spikey.

Do you realise just how many times 'tales' and 'legends' from antiquity are shunned and scoffed at by mainstream science, sometimes for centuries with proponents having been laughed at and ridiculed out of hand, only to be vindicated years later when so-called mainstrean science can be bothered to get off it's metaphorical and highly, almost rabidly sceptical arse and go and actually look into the claims?

Many, many times.

For such a long while, TROY was considered to be pure fantasy derived from skewed legends...now of course, it is absolute fact...if only science had possessed more inclination to practice the 'scientific method' and less inclined towards disinformation and ridiculing those that push against conventional boundaries...Troy would have been discovered long ago.

The same can be said of many such finds.

The 'Siberian Cauldrons' could very well be such a find, or could be simply nothing...the scientific method of actually researching the possibility of their existence, seems to be less preferable than rubbishing almost any given subject out of hand.

Careers and academic reputations are ultimately not that important, despite time invested in building them by individual scientists. Yet, that is what is protected time and again, at the expense of actual science...such a shame.

Another dimension to this story could very well be one of active and ongoing supression...especially if the Cauldrons did turn out to be highly controversial, belonging perhaps to an earlier and much more sophisticated society than our own contemporary one.

Can you imagine the efforts energies that would be expended in denying the truth of such an paradigm shifting archaeological discovery and the huge ramifications that would result from that knowledge?

I'd say supressing photographic imagery of the Cauldrons, should they exist, would be one of the first and the very least that would be done to maintain the status quo and false perceptions of a linear Human development, rather than what could actually be a cyclic development, incorporating periods of relatively rapid enlightenment and technological advancement followed by periods of decline, perhaps catastophic decline...the Cauldrons could very well be tangible proof of such a cycle..which of course would be an absolute nail in the coffin for the linear theory proposed by conventional science...and for those with lifetimes and prestigeous names made for themselves and their prestigeous institutions they inhabit, however valuable to open and honest science and our understanding of our existence on this world, would ironically be something to be feared and actively and strongly discouraged.

Mores the pity.

Siberia is an almost unimaginely huge area..things can easily get lost there and never found again...finding these Cauldrons should they actually be there, would NOT be an easy task, but as the saying goes, nothing truely worthwhile is ever easy.

And Naysaying is quite easy.
