Life on Gliese 581d - the super earth and the text mesages

Recently you may have heard in the media that a website allowed over 200,000 people to send text messages to a likely habitial planet Gliese 581d (sent last week 24th of August).

It may have seemed a bit of a joke, especially when it will take up to 20 years for the messages to reach the planet - but the chance of life on Gliese 581d may be more real considering the characteristics of the newly discovered planet.....

With the discovery of Gliese 581d scientists are now finally working out and opening their minds to the idea that our galaxy is much more habitial than once thought and the probability that there are more planets sustaining life out there increases with every similar discovery.

Article from the 'texting event' to Gliese 581d:

The website has been set up to mark national science week in Australia, and people from all over the world are invited to submit a message, no longer than 160 characters, that will be beamed in to space by satellites at the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex.

The messages are being sent to Gliese 581d, a planet eight times heavier than our own located more than 20 light years away in the constellation Libra. Scientists have identified Gliese 581d as the nearest Earthlike planet outside our solar system, and thus perhaps likely to support life.

Just imagine 20 years from now on Planet Gliese 581d - Danny Ebe is sitting in class and his telepad goes beserk creating a rucus in class - he is just about to be punished by being zapped to moon 23 school punishment zone - when all the telepads in the 56th sector suddenly go beserk. All Ebe's from sector 56 sue the telepad company for malfunctioning of the network - In the court case the company claims an unusual signal was received from a planet close to a small to medium sized star near Alpha Centuri, which could indicate another race of aliens - The reaction nationwide is ' Yeah sure - like were going to believe that one....'
