Stunned onlookers flooded the Norwegian Meteorological Institute with calls after seeing the dazzling light.
Witness Totto Eriksen from Tromsø spotted the lights on the school run with his daughter Amalie.
He said: "We saw it from the Inner Harbor in Tromsø. It was absolutely fantastic.

"It almost looked like a rocket that spun around and around and then went diagonally down the heavens."
"It looked like the moon was coming over the mountain, but then came something completely different."
Nick Pope, former UFO analyst for the Ministry of Defence, said: "My first thought was this was a meteor, a fireball, or debris from an old satellite burning up in the Earth's atmosphere.
"But the spiral motion makes this unlikely. This is truly bizarre. It's a real mystery.
"A meteor or a fireball would simply travel in a straight line but for something to spiral in this way appears to go against the laws of physics.
"Some halfwits may think it is the Northern Lights but they illuminate the sky with a green glow. This is completely different from any image of the Northern Lights that I have ever seen.
"It's ironic that something like this should happen the very week after the MoD terminated its UFO project. It just goes to show how wrong that decision was."

Why rate this a 3, idiots
Our (Norwegian) defence department claims this is a Russian (or Swedish) rocket...
Well, COME ON!!! THIS IS NOT A GOD DAMN ROCKET !!!! I am utterly amazed of how stupid they really think we are.
The spiral is a hypnotic pattern rotating as if drawing the viewer into the whirlpool. Anything imaginable could have happened to the people who looked at this and their memories could have been erased. We can only hope they were given some information concerning a near revealing of the UFO situation. Cosmostarman.Tripod.Com
I saw it. It looked cool but there was nothing that seemed ufo or god-like. I'm just waiting for the explanation from the investigators.
this sort of stuff is right out of revalation!!! could this be the end of days??? or could this be a test run of project blue beam??? this could be a false flag event!!! or even a black hole created by the L.H.C.??? so many questions.
If you look at the spiral, it is almost perfectly symmetrical, How could a missile gone haywire look this symmetrical? That is a load of b s. This is the beginning of the end.
They have about 10 videos posted at the BallmerFoundation.com They also have several expert theorys on this.. Not alot of pepole are buying Moscows explaination. IF you want to see some of the best video footage you can see it at http://www.BallmerFoundation.com
Get real. This is a failed rocket launch. The images closely match those from other known failed launches.
What you can see doesn't defy the laws of physics, it can be totally explained by them.
It isn't aliens, the Book of Revelations (which is surprisingly coy about mentioning spiral lights in Norway, or anywhere else) or the end of days.
No wormholes, no black holes, just a**holes.
it's impossible to be a rocket. Russian are lying !
The spiral was reportedly viewed by a number of observers at or near Tromso, Norway.
Tromso is also home to Tromsø Geophysical Observatory's Ramfjordmoen field station, which examines "the layering of the ionised component of the upper atmosphere". Tromsø Geophysical Observatory
Look at the spiral, the blue light, the lack of light contained in an outer ring following the 'burn out'. This is not a failed rocket launch. It is too symmetrical to be a rocket out of control.
The light is energy, pure and simple. My theory: someone is playing with the energy in the upper ionosphere. Why or how remains to be answered.
K soundslike the most intelligent one here. HAARP is very real and has been a legitimate option since the late eighties.
You can check it out on youtube. Rockets are just a very convenient excuse for the fact that governments are testing technology that they don't yet know the efeects of, just like the first atomic bomb tests.
