My wife and I just sat outside with just about half the neighborhood and watched a huge diamond shaped object for over 45 minutes. The object started out looking spherical and then changed to a diamond and became brighter and was self illuminated as the sun went down.

In the first few minutes we are only taking images and as we were a military helicopter went over the house and was heading in the direction of the object. Several planes were in the area and they were doing circles. They would fly towards the object, circle to the left and come right to head towards the object again. I live in Phoenix in the north central valley. A friend who lives to the West in Sun City called and said it looked like it was right over his house. So to me the object in my image is twenty miles away and at least 6,000 to 8,000 feet up.

I am not saying it is extra terrestrial, just that it is a UFO. It was the brightest and largest object like this I have ever witnessed. With my little Nikon camera, it doesn't do it justice. To the naked eye it was much larger and brighter than my zoom could handle.

Looking at it via telescope clearly showed it to be a balloon.

My girlfriend and I were walking out of Arizona Mills today at around 7:30pm and saw a guy looking in the northwestern sky with a high powered camera. I asked him what he was doing and he pointed out the object which I immediately thought was too bright to be a star. We considered Venus but when he zoomed in on it, the object had the outline of a hot air balloon. The three of us considered the idea but could not come up with a reasonable explanation of its self luminescence...it was brighter than Venus and appeared to be within our atmosphere. Very odd indeed.

Not a UFO at all. It is EBEX
(http://groups.physics.umn.edu/cosmology/ebex), a balloon-borne telescope to look at light from the Big Bang. It was launched from Fort Sumner, NM where the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility (http://www.csbf.nasa.gov) launches balloons. CSBF also launch balloons from Palestine, TX and from other parts of the world.

My brother called me here in Montana from his home in Scottsdale to tell me about this last night. He and a bunch of other people in his complex watched this sighting for quite a long time. I was on the phone with him as he described what was happening. I could hear all the other people in the background speculating on what this was. Very interesting!

Nice video of Venus.

I saw it and observed it for almost an hour. It WAS NOT a Balloon! I called channel 5 (KPHO) News Desk and I was told that they had recived several calls regarding it but that It was only a Weather Balloon. A Weather Balloon does not emit a bright light. It stayed "lit" and in the air slightly past sunset. Wierd!

I was in Prescott and saw the same object. At first I thought it was a hot air balloon but then it didn't move and when I called my husband in Show Low, he saw it too, so we knew it was very far up. I've never seen anything so bright besides the moon. When I came home after sunset the object was still there, I went inside for a few minutes and when I came back out, it was gone. If it was Venus than why was it gone so quickly? Very cool though!

Hi! I saw that yesterday. I work at Jewel of the Crown in Old Town Scottsdale. We got a call from the owners son saying that there was something in the sky n nw of us. So I went out to the parking garage and went to the top. And right above camelback mt.(from my perspective) there was a BRIGHT light just hanging there. I have seen venus, I know it's position in the sky, this was all wrong. And it was brighter than any star I have ever seen. After watching it for a few minutes it faded away.

we saw it too. we are more over central phoenix and watched it for almost the entire time! Very bright and never moved. Amazing! Thanks for posting and taking pictures.

We saw this too, from east Mesa. If this was only a weather balloon, why was it so bright (after sunset - we saw it until about 8:15), and how did it just disappear in a moment? One second it was there, the next it was just gone. I would think a weather balloon would have to disappear slowly, or seem to fade away.

Folks, it wasn't Venus. Right now Venus can only be seen in the eastern sky for a little while before sunrise. She's not in the western sky at sunset at all right now. And, even a planet will set so it won't hold its position in the sky for nearly an hour as many of you said it did.
It couldn't possibly be a weather balloon, either. A weather balloon drifts with the breeze. It doesn't stay in one spot, hovering in the sky. Whoever told some of you that it was a ballon is either an idiot or she thinks we're all idiots who'll easily accept such a ridiculous explanation.

It was a stratospheric balloon launched from the Municipal Airport of Fort Sumner (NM) by the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility who operates the base on behalf the NASA balloon program.

I was in the Sandia Mts outside of Alb New Mexico. Witnessed the "Object" for over 30 minutes. Snapped 8 pics as well.

couple of interesting facts: I called the local Sherrif's office that said several folks have also called in. 2 Officers came to the house to interview us about the sighting.

I'd be happy to share some of the pics but not sure how?

The news said it was a weather balloon. I called the weather balloon folks in Texas the next day and they said indeed a very massive weather balloon had been launched out of Fort Sumner NM earlier that day or the day before... forgot which.

However the GPS tracking on the balloon put it at least 50 miles northwest of where I was looking.

In my pics I see no string or payload below, granted the camera isn't a very good one.

Also why would the police come to interview us if it was s imply a weather balloon that regularly get's launched and is seen across NM and Arizona?

I am in Tempe, Arizona and I too disagree that this was the balloon they claimed it was on the news.

The weather ballon was crossing in the northern sky towards Havasu according to the tracking website I looked up.

I could be wrong, but that brilliant light was due West from where I was and it sat there, motionless for quite some time. I was marking it's location from the corner of the house. I got distracted for a few minutes and when I looked again it was gone, so I can't say how it disappeared.

The luminescence could have been a reflection from the setting sun, but I've never seen anything like that before.

Now I'm fascinated with the HUGE and brilliant star in the Eastern sky at 4-4:30 am. Some says it's Vega and some say Venus, but again - I've never seen anything like it before in my life and I've always been a stargazer.

the bright light over eastern arizona july 9,10,11 viewed 4to5am thru a telescope shows to be a round ball with lights all arond it with 2 bigger spots on bottom straight from across from each other and a large spot or opening on top, its constantly moving in place with lights coming on not in sequence but randomly the outside ring around it is very bright it also has black rings moving around on it seems like it is alive,

ufos exist all you have to do is look up into the sky at night in tempe, Az learn what a shooting star looks like so you can tell the difference and be surprised. You wont see one every night but if you go out for about 15 minutes every night you will see one a week. Sounds crazy but its true.

i watched this from san tan valley/queen creek and i saw and have video of multiple objects that flashed bright white and red. At one time there were 4 or 5 all together in a group. I have video of 3 of them in a row, kind of a "v" formation, and you can see the flashing lights in all three of them. There seemed to be one main one that was more constant and btighter than the others. One by one, at different times, they all seemed to fly staight off to the north. The last one, which i believe was the dominant one, also eventually flew off to the north the same path the others took. If i can figure out how to transfer my video to youtube i will... i wish i filmed more, but i didnt think i was getting very good video, but what i have is pretty cool.

Phoenix skies are LOADED with UFOs night and day. By day, they elave puffy white trails. Occasionally you'll catch a glimpse of a metallic object at the head of the white trail, evidently producing the smoke or whatever it is. By night, drive up and down I-17 and you'll have a real skyshow. Just be careful not to rear end anyone. Seriously, every single day and night for the miserable year I spent in Phoenix, I saw inexplicable air sights. And I am no uneducated tweaker bumpkin, but a rational expert eye witness type. Nightly there were at least two large shining white objects in the sky near my apartment. They were not stars or planets, I know what those look like. The place is infested with paranormal activity, the entire state. Which may be why the people behave so oddly.

Hello. Today is 10/15/2009. I just saw a similar object going over North Scottsdale headed south east. It ZAGGED at an almost right angle heading west, and i couldnt see it anymore behind some trees. I'm a technical engineer for an IT Security Company. I could care less if you believe me.

My mother, aunt and I saw this leaving Troon Mountain heading toward Pima. It was extremely bright (at sunlit dusk) and clearly visible all the way to Frank Lloyd Wright and the 101. After appearing stationary for some time it appeared to travel south as well attracting much attention. I have never seen a weather balloon but have to wonder if they are this incredibly large and bright in day to evening skies. We watched it for about a half hour until it disappeared from view. Don't know if this was due to our changing location or it's movement.

Hi

I have been taking a look at UFO reports in the files of the Royal Australian Air Force. Some of them seem to be explainable in terms of stratospheric balloons. Please take a look at my posts at:
