Atmospheric Jets October 21, 1989 over Australia

A strange atmospheric phenomenon called 'jets' caught on video for the first time:

For the first time the impressive atmospherics, called jets, were seen in black and white video, shot shuttle October 21, 1989 over Australia. A September 14, 2001, scientists captured the "giant jet" - a blue cone, Reaching from the tops of cumulonimbus clouds up to the ionosphere, where the road ended his series of flashes. It is believed that blue jets due to the presence of ionized and neutral molecular nitrogen in the emission spectrum which has a corresponding band. Jets can reach heights of 70 km.

Coincidentally, what was probably the first visual sighting of this phenomenon was also made in Australia - in 1893!
"On the evening of February 4, 1893, J. Ewen Davidson was watching a distant thunderstorm in Queensland Australia. Twenty to twenty-five times he saw 'a patch of rosy light' mount upward from the stormclouds and vanish. In addition to these patches he also saw a few pale streamers beam upward from the clouds."
