I've taled about this recently and yet again NASA and scientists have come back on TV again to ring the alarm bells..

The sun follows an 11 year cycle where the poles shift quickly on the 11th year. During this time massive solar storms occur as extra energy is dissipated. The last storm was in 2001 so the next one will be in 2012.
The concern this time is that this will be a big solar storm and the protective shield of the Earth - the magnetosphere (which is like a shield & usually protects us even during large sun storms) is starting to not to function strong enough and may falter this time.
There are alternate theories going around for why this is so - NASA says is simply because the storms will be very powerful this time, other people say the concern is that our magnetosphere is showing signs of weakening and some controversial theories say a third problem - the magnetic alignment of in the milky way at the time will cause the magnetosphereto fail at the same time of the solar storms.
NASA warms us of the Super Solar Storms of 2012 again!- they are worried:
The Sun's magnetic poles will remain as they are now, with the north magnetic pole pointing through the Sun's southern hemisphere, until the year 2012 when they will reverse again. This transition happens, as far as we know, at the peak of every 11-year sunspot cycle -- like clockwork Source - NASA.'
