Were these lights simply a bunch of Lanterns together or something else? Filmed over Vaucluse in South Eastern France: August 11, 2012 11:45 p.m.

How can these be lanterns they light up on there own high in the sky. Who's lighting them? If they are flares being dropped from a plane/jet why can't we see or hear the plane or jet?
IMO they are some type of communications. There have been many sightings worldwide like this one all recent and if you notice each sighting has the same number of lights in it . The same lights turn off/on in mid air and they form a sort of pattern or long sentence. I don't think they are aircraft flares there is no aircraft or sound from a plane/jet
